چکیده

The characteristic colony morphology is an important distinguishing feature which is used for recognizing members of the group of pleuropneumonia-like organisms. However, characteristic colony morphology may not be apparent when the organisms are freshly isolated from the body or when the growth is crowded on the surface of solid medium. In order to determine similarities or differences among the various strains of these organisms now being isolated from several sources, a study of their cellular morphology is desirable. This information may then aid in a more precise identification of these unusual organisms which is needed for their classification among microorganisms. The average diameter of the smallest phase of the saprophytic strains was shown by Laidlaw and Elford (1936) to be of the order of 125 to 175 m,u. Since this range is beyond the limits of resolution of the ordinary light microscope, the detailed morphology of these organisms needs to be obtained by means other than the light microscope. The electron microscope, especially with the aid of heavy metal shadowing, offers a means of obtamiing some of the necessary information. The results of studying with the electron microscope several strains of pleuropneumonia-like organisms from man and chickens are presented.

The propagation of a virulent goat pleuropneumonia-like organism in the chick embryo.

Although the organisms of the pleuropneumonia group isolated from man (Paine et al., 1950; Keller and Morton, 1954) and from several species of animals (Tang et al., 1936; Delaplane, 1948; Hoyt et al., 1951; Sheriff and Piercy, 1952) have been cultivated in the chick embryo, the goat pleuropneumonia-like organism (PPLO) recently isolated from goats and reported by us, to our knowledge, has not ...

Metabolic studies on three strains of Pleuropneumonia-like organisms isolated from man.

The peculiar type of growth common to Asterococcus mycoides (Pleuropneumonia bouum), pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO), and L forms of bacteria has lead to confusion and controversy. This controversy involves the interrelationships of these groups and of strains within the groups as well as their relation to bacteria in general. Excellent reviews by Sabin (1941), Elleneberger-Nobel (1951), ...

Role of organisms of the pleuropneumonia group in human genital infections.

The isolation of organisms of the pleuropneumonia group from the human genital tract has aroused considerable interest in view of the attention now being paid to the aetiology of non-specific (non-gonococcal) urethritis. The first isolation of a pleuropneumonia-like organism from man was made by Dienes and Edsall (1937) from a Bartholin's abscess. Dienes and his associates (Dienes, 1940; 'Diene...

The growth of pleuropneumonia-like organisms of human origin: cultivation in the developing chick embryo and an in vitro growth cycle.

Some strains of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) of human origin grow quite sparingly in vitro; therefore, attempts were made to determine if these organisms could be sustained better in the developing chick embryo. A semiquantitative comparison of growth on artificial media and in the chick embryo is presented. As pleuropneumonia-like organisms aIe frequent inhabitants of the genitourinar...

Electron micrographs made from L forms of Proteus and two human strains of pleuropneumonia-like organisms.

The organisms in the cultures of the pleuropneumonia group and of the L forms of bacteria are visible with the light microscope. Their morphology has remained controversial for a long time because they are easily deformed in microscopic preparations and give riise to bizarre forms. It seems well established at present (Klieneberger and Smiles, 1942; Dienes, 1945) that the cultures, with a few e...
